Effects of Insecticide, Weed-Free Period, and Row Spacing on Soybean (Glycine max) and Sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia) Growth

Results from identical experiments conducted at Headland, AL, and Plains, GA, from 1980 through 1982 show insecticide treatment had little effect on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Coker 237′] growth and morphology. Maximum insecticide applications increased soybean seed weight in two of five trials. Soybeans maintained free of sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia L. ♯3 CASOB) for 4 weeks after emergence produced yields equal to those receiving season-long control in all trials, and 2-week control was equal to season-long maintenance in three trials. Length of weed interference-free maintenance did not affect soybean height. The number of pods per plant and seed weight were decreased when there was no control. Sicklepod shoot fresh weight and numbers decreased as the weed-free period increased from 0 weeks through the season. Row spacing had no effect on soybean height or seed size; however, the number of pods per plant was higher in 80- than in 40-cm rows. Row spacing influenced yield in only one trial where 20-cm rows outyielded 40-cm rows. A significant interaction occurred between the weed-free period and row spacing in two trials. Soybeans in 20-cm rows outyielded those in 40- and 80-cm rows when sicklepod was not controlled (i.e., 0 weeks interference-free maintenance).

When peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.) were not kept weed-free, a single cultivation 4 weeks after emergence increased yields substantially over those of non-cultivated peanuts. Cultivation had no effect, however, when peanuts were maintained weed-free for 4 or 8 weeks. The length of the weed-free periods, cultivation, and the presence or absence of peanuts all strongly influenced the density of the sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia L.) plants which grew above the canopy of peanut foliage. Peanut foliage, which was released from weed-free maintenance at 8 weeks but then competed with sicklepod until harvest, reduced the green weight of sicklepod 95 to 98% thus illustrating the competitive capacity of the peanut plant. Moderate stands of Florida beggarweed [Desmodium tortuosum (Sw.) DC] did not markedly affect yield of peanuts. Application of a growth regulator, succinic acid, 2,2-dimethylhydrazide (SADH), did not influence weed competition or yield of in-shell peanuts consistently at any of the three locations. Quality analyses showed that treatment variables did not modify the taste of peanuts; however, in some experiments, components of the market grade of in-shell peanuts were changed by SADH, cultivation, length of the weed-free period, and cultivation X length of the weed-free period.
Executive Function in Pediatric Sleep-Disordered Breathing: A Meta-analysis

Objectives: Evaluate the association between pediatric sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and executive functioning. Methods: We searched multiple electronic databases for peer-reviewed journal articles related to pediatric SDB and executive functioning. We included studies that assessed SDB via polysomnography, included objective or questionnaire measures of executive function, and had an age-matched control group. Fourteen articles met inclusion criteria with a total sample of 1697 children ages 5 to 17 years (M=9.81 years; SD=0.34). We calculated an overall effect size for each of the five executive domains (vigilance, inhibition, working memory, shifting, and generativity) as well as effect sizes according to SDB severity: mild, moderate, severe. We also calculated effect sizes separately for objective and subjective questionnaires of executive functioning. Results: We found a medium effect size (−0.427) for just one of five executive function domains on objective neuropsychological measures (generativity). In contrast, effect sizes on all three executive domains measured via questionnaire data were significant, with effect sizes ranging from medium (−0.64) to large (−1.06). We found no difference between executive domains by severity of SDB. Conclusions: This meta-analysis of executive function separated into five domains in pediatric SDB suggested lower performance in generativity on objective neuropsychological measures. There were no differences associated with SDB severity. Questionnaire data suggested dysfunction across the three executive domains measured (inhibition, working memory, shifting). Overall, limited evidence suggested poorer performance in executive function in children with SDB according to objective testing, and subjective ratings of executive function suggested additional worsened performance. Temporal changes in soil organic carbon and aggregate-associated organic carbon after reclamation of abandoned, salinized farmland

A field experiment was conducted to quantify changes in soil aggregation and aggregate-associated soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration 1, 3, 5 and 10 years after abandoned, salinized land in the Manasi River Basin was reclaimed for cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Results showed that reclamation significantly increased SOC concentrations and SOC stocks. Specifically, 10 years of cotton production increased SOC concentrations by 45% in the 0–60 cm depth and SOC stocks by 35%. The SOC concentrations and stocks decreased as soil depth increased. Reclamation time, season and soil depth had significant interaction effects on SOC. The SOC concentrations were significantly and positively correlated with available soil nitrogen and available soil phosphorus. Compared with abandoned farmland, macro-aggregate-associated (>250 µm) SOC concentrations in the 0–60 cm depth increased by 47% after 5 years of cotton production and by 53% after 10 years of cotton production. The contribution of macro-aggregate-associated SOC to total SOC in the 0–60 cm depth increased by 87% after 5 years of cotton production and by 69% after 10 years of cotton production. The findings indicate that soil aggregates were more stable after abandoned, salinized farmland was reclaimed for cotton production. Furthermore, cotton production can increase SOC concentrations and sequester C in this arid area.

The Goodland/Comanche Peak Limestone, Kiamichi Formation and basal Duck Creek Limestones around Fort Worth Texas yield a limited number of cosmopolitan ammonite and inoceramid bivalve taxa that allow precise correlation with the sequence that has been used as a standard in northwest Europe. The upper part of the Goodland/Comanche Peak Limestones yields species of Dipoloceras that show the base of the Upper Albian substage, provisionally defined as the first appearance of D. cristatum (Brongniart, 1822), to lie within this unit. Brancoceras aff. cricki Spath, 1934, Mortoniceras (Deiradoceras) beloventer new species, and Actinoceramus cf. concentricus (Parkinson, 1819) parabolicus Crampton, 1996a, co-occurs with D. cristatum in the Comanche Peak Limestone. The Kiamichi Formation yields rare Mortoniceras (Mortoniceras) pricei (Spath, 1922), M. (Deiradoceras) prerostratum Spath, 1921, M. (D.) bipunctatum Spath, 1933, and Actinoceramus sulcatus (Parkinson, 1819) morphotypes that allow correlation with the European Hysteroceras orbignyi and Hysteroceras varicosum subzones of the Mortoniceras inflatum zone. The basal Duck Creek Limestone yields Mortoniceras (Deiradoceras) sp. and Hysteroceras cf. varicosum (J. de C. Sowerby, 1824), and can also be correlated with the varicosum subzone.

Conventionally, the wetting of metallic substrates by liquid metals involves undermining of the substrate–oxide layer by the liquid. Evidence is presented here for an alternative wetting process involving spreading of liquid copper along the exterior of the oxide layer on Ti–48 at.% Al–2 at.% Cr–2 at.% Nb substrates. A mechanism is presented that involves compositional changes in the liquid, which in turn allow a wetting-promoting reaction between the (initially unreactive) liquid and the exterior layer of the substrate oxide.
Heterosis, overdominance for grain yield, and alpha-amylase activity in F1 hybrids between near-isogenic Rht dwarf and tall wheats

The Rht-B1b, Rht-D1b and Rht-B1c alleles for reduced height in wheat (the Norin 10 and Tom Thumb dwarfing genes previously known as Rht1, Rht2 and Rht3) were exploited in combinations to generate a near-continuous range of plant heights, from 53 cm to 123 cm, amongst near-isogenic homozygotes and F1 hybrids. Pleiotropic yield effects of Rht genes were measured in both homozygous (intravarietal) and heterozygous (intervarietal) genetic backgrounds. Heterosis due to overdominance of Rht genes was detected among intravarietal hybrids. The effects of heterozygosity at other genetic loci (mean dominance) were determined, independently of Rht effects, from comparisons between intravarietal and intervarietal F1 hybrids.
Genotypes of intermediate plant heights gave maximum yields, in agreement with other trials of the homozygous lines, so that heterosis (hybrid exceeding best parent) for Rht yield effects was observed in crosses between tall and dwarf isogenic pairs. This heterosis combined additively with increased mean weight per grain in intervarietal crosses, generating the highest overall grain yields in hybrids with semi-dwarf stature in heterozygous genetic backgrounds. The Rht-B1c allele showed single-gene overdominance for grain yield, also the production of alpha-amylase in ripening grains of Maris Huntsman was effectively inhibited in the Rht-B1a/c intravarietal hybrid. The Rht-B1c allele thus offers advantages for both grain yield and grain quality in the heterozygous condition and should be considered as an alternative to the conventional semi-dwarfing genes Rht-B1b and Rht-D1b for F1 varieties in environments conductive to preharvest sprouting.

GaAs epitaxial layers grown on Si substrates up to 4 inches in diameter by OMCVD are characterized with respect to the materials parameters important for their application for device and circuit manufacturing. The layers are characterized using commercial flatness and surface quality measurement instrumentation, x-ray diffraction, Schottky diode characteristics, and photoluminescence. The 4-inch diameter GaAs epilayers are a singleoriented phase and are of comparable quality to GaAs epilayers grown on smaller diameter Si substrates.
